Talent management is one of the critical challenges facing business leaders today. In today’s tough economic times, companies are continuously faced with having to do more with less while at the same time, recognise, recruit, reward and retain the very best individuals – the people who can help build their organisations for the future.
In a recent CIPD report, (2009) ‘War on talent?’, they found that talent management and, by association, succession planning becomes more not less important in an economic downturn. During uncertain times, it is more important than ever to know where key talent sits within an organisation and how to develop people to meet both short and long-term business requirements.
The balance between home-grown and acquired talent is an important consideration in creating senior management teams across international operations. The trend in this area is to have a pool of talented people as opposed to a position planning perspective.
The objective for many leading companies is to provide broader organisational and career objectives for employees at all levels in the organisation – a shift away from traditional instructor-led ‘training’ to ‘learning’ and ‘coaching’, on a self-directed, work-based process.
Talent management is about putting the right people in the right jobs at the right time and in keeping these people on board.
When top performers were asked what motivated them, they stated that they wanted an environment that allows them:
- to get results
- to get excited
- to work “out in the open”
- to grow and challenge themselves
Annunzio identifies 5 key steps for leaders:
- Identify your top performers.
- Remove the cultural and organisational obstacles in their way.
- Convince your top performers that change is on the way.
- Communicate with employees in new and irreverent ways.
- Sing the praises of the employees whom you need to keep.

Change is endemic in every organisation and today’s leaders require enhanced skills in order to build a high performing culture, as well as managing their own careers.
Leaders must demonstrate that they can define and articulate the company vision and strategy, initiate and manage change effectively, take risks, and be an excellent communicator and coach.
One of the major challenges for the leader is in building a successful high performing team. The statistics on employee engagement provide a real challenge.
According to the Gallup Management Journal’s semi-annual Employee Engagement Index:
- 29% of employees are actively engaged in their jobs
- 54% are not engaged
- 17% are actively disengaged
